Jack Gillett, 1931-2012

Very sadly we report the passing of Jack Gillett, the club’s Life President. Jack was a founder member, coach, club secretary and treasurer for many years and raised a lot of funds, without which the club would not exist today. Jack started fencing in the Army, (REME), where he was training as a pentathlete. Being assigned to the Canal zone in Egypt during the Suez crisis no horses were available (camels not being allowed!) so he just concentrated on the fencing. He became   club secretary and treasurer around 1990 until he had to retire due to ill health in 2006 having contracted Parkinsons disease. He was also head coach at Bexley Fencing Club for many years and both clubs respect his invaluable contribution to their existence and to introducing hundreds of people to fencing. Condolences have been sent to his wife, Cynthia, son Simon and daughter Joyce.
