A Sport for All – A Sport for Life

The Musketeers is our club for 9 to 14 year olds

Started in September 2010 there are 60 Junior Members as at March 26

They are passing Achievement Awards and compete in county and regional competitions taking gold, silver and bronze medals.

Fencing teaches a number of skills: Fitness, agility and quick thinking of course,  but also life skills such as Respect for others, Self-discipline, Self-confidence, leadership, Decision making and Loyalty. Fencing helps grow and develop good citizens

Fencing is good for children and older students, it keeps the brain fed with oxygen and the body active. It helps them study and relax. A fit body gives them a fit mind

We also believe that the personal development of the child is more important than that of fencing skill so we don’t push them into competing but let them choose when or if, they are ready.

One Musketeer parent has said –

(My son) is loving the sport and very glad to be involved. It’s a lovely club you run – focused on the sport and challenging, but very friendly and welcoming too.

Ages: Young people can usually start at the age of 9 providing that they become 10 during the current academic year.

Meeting on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays (see Where and When for times) we have four qualified and DBS checked coaches. There is a group of starters and a group of more experienced to which the starters can progress within a term or two depending on individual ability. We also get them fencing each other on the electric kit as soon as we can to build experience.

The starter group have intensive group coaching and the more experienced practice with electric weapons every week and have regular 5-10 minute one to one coaching.

Children should wear trainers, T-Shirt (perhaps bring a spare too), loose trousers, trackies or stretch leggings, (not shorts) and, very important, a drink. (yes, I have already said that but…)

Competitions are encouraged as this is the best way to learn and grow as a fencer but it is up to the individual. We hold an annual Club Championships with an array of awards and prizes so that everyone goes away with some recognition of their achievement.

Welfare: Child Welfare is paramount. Parents, please see the section on ClubMark for more information on this and also the Parents Fencing Survival Guide

There is regular WhatsApp/email communication with parents/carers, a parents evening once year and at least one parent/carer is elected to the Managing Committee to represent the Junior members. i.e. all those under 18.

For fees see our What Does It Cost page
